Before Activity:

  1. Read over the poems in the Toolbox and make sure you agree with the selection of poems. Feel free to add any other poems that might be more appropriate for your class.

  2. Collect the necessary materials listed in the prompt, including craft paper, translucent paper, colored tissue paper, and basic prototyping tools.

Throughout the Activity:

  1. Guide students in analyzing the chosen poem by encouraging them to delve into its analogies, imagery, and significance. Provide support as needed to help students extract key themes and concepts from the poem that can be visually represented.

  2. Support students in exploring how different materials capture or reflect light in various ways. Encourage experimentation with combinations of light, shadow, and the provided supplies to convey the imagery drawn from the selected poem.

After the Activity:

  1. Review students' final compositions, sketches, and photographs.

  2. Explore a conversation of how students' compositions visually represent the imagery and themes of the poem, fostering deeper understanding and connection to the literature.
